Drogba joins Phoenix Rising

Chelsea Legend Didier Drogba has joined United Soccer League side Phoenix Rising as a player and a co-owner.

The former Chelsea striker played for the club from 2004-2012 winning the premier league and Champions League scoring 157 goals in 341 appearances.

Drogba last featured for Major League Soccer Side Montreal Impact before quitting the club November 2016.

The club released a statement on its website : "Drogba will help develop the team as a player before advancing to an executive role with the Phoenix MLS expansion franchise."

"It's a good transition because I want to carry on playing but I'm almost 40 and it's important for me to prepare for my later career. Drogba said"

He added : "I had offers from China, from England - in both the Premier League and even the Championship but they were only as a player,"

"This was the right offer because it was important for me to think about playing, because I enjoy it, but also to get to the next stage of my career."

Drogba joins his former team mate Shawn Wright Philips at the club.
