Cristiano Ronaldo's Hat-trick Downs Athletico Madrid

Real Madrid continued their unbeaten run in this season's Champions League by defeating Athletico Madrid 3-0 at the Bernabeu in the semi-finals first leg clash with Ronaldo becoming the first player to score back-to-back hat-tricks in the Champions League knockout stages.

Ronaldo who scored a hat-trick in the quater-finals second leg against Bayern Munich also got another hat-trick tonight putting him on 10 goals just a goal behind top scorer Lionel Messi.

Madrid who has defeated Athletico in the Champions League finals twice in three seasons once again showed their dominance over their neighbour.

Varane returned to the starting line-up after recovering from an Hamstring injury. Lucas starts at right back for Athletico Madrid replacing the injured Jose Gimenez.

Madrid almost got an early goal after Oblak parried Carvajal's right footed shot into the path of Benzema who failed to convert the rebound.

Few minutes after Cristiano Ronaldo got the opener heading a Casemiro volley into the back of the net.

With Real Madrid in front they pressed for the second goal which almost came in the 16th minute when Varane was able to get his head to a corner from Kroos but Oblak somehow got a hand on the ball to deny the Madrid defender.

A minute after Koke plays Gameiro in behind Varane, the striker tries to go around the onrushing keeper but Navas was able to get the ball with his outstreched right hand.

Ronaldo scored his second goal in the 73rd minute with Benzema holding the ball up well before releasing the Portuguese who sends the looping ball at the back of the net.

Ronaldo completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute Connecting with a Vazquez pull back taking a touch before guiding the ball into the back of the net.
