Kerber Crashes out

Angelique Kerber became the first women’s top seed to lose in the opening round at Roland Garros in the Open Era on Sunday.

Kerber lost convincingly to Ekaterina Makarova, 6-2, 6-2 and is now out of the French Open.

Makarova converted on six of 14 break point attempts and had 19 unforced errors to Kerber’s 25.

She won 61 percent of her first serves, and crucially nearly 50 percent of her second serves. The unseeded Russian moves on to the second round.

Venus Williams, the tenth seed for the women and the only Williams sister in this tournament due to her sister’s pregnancy, made it past her opening round, besting Qiang Wang, 6-4, 7-6(3).

Also on the women’s side, Petra Kvitova won her first match since being stabbed during a burglary in her home in December. Kvitova, 27, bested American Julia Boserup, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the second round of Roland Garros.

Kvitova suffered career-threatening injuries to her left hand in the attack, and many thought she might not play in Paris. She is the No. 15 seed.

Also in seeded women’s action, Timea Bacsinszky, the No. 30 seed, bested unseeded Sara Sorribes Tormo in her opening match, 6-1, 6-2.

Roberta Vinci, the No. 31 seed, lost a three-set match to Monica Puig, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

On the men’s side, Dominic Thiem comfortably defeated Bernard Tomic with the sixth seed winning 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

19th seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas defeated Romania's Marius Copil in four sets, 7-6, 1-6, 4-6, 2-6 to qualify for the second round.

Mikhail Kukushkin secured a straight set victory over Tennys Sandgren, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.

26th-ranked Gilles Muller was pushed hard by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez , and the experienced player from Luxembourg crashed out 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Argentina's Horacia Zeballos defeated the unseeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Dan Evans became the first Brit to be knocked out as he lost to Tommy Robredo 5-7 6-4 6-3 6-1.

Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi were in the fourth set of their match, with Bonzi on the cusp of victory when Medvedev retired from the game.

Rafael Nadal's hope for a La-decima kick started with a straight set win over Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic also won in straight sets to record his first win under his new American gaffer Andre Agassi and to keep the hope of a semi final clash with Rafael Nadal who has won 92% of his game on clay alive.
